“I Will Build My Church”: Why Your Investment Is Kingdom Work
Near Caesarea Philippi, Jesus once asked His disciples who people said He was. Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus responded with a promise that has shaped two thousand years of history: “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:16–18).
Notice the pronoun. Jesus doesn’t say you will build my church—or even we will build my church. He says I will build it. The church was never a human idea that Peter, or any council of leaders, dreamed up on its own initiative — it is Christ’s building project, with Christ as architect and foundation. Peter was given a foundational role in that work. And every believer since has been invited to become part of the structure itself.
The Church as God’s Chosen Instrument
Scripture presents the church as more than one religious option among many good things God might have done to reach the world — it is God’s appointed means for establishing His Kingdom on earth. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10), He was describing what happens wherever a local body of believers gathers to worship, disciple its children, care for its neighbors, and send people out with the gospel. The church is the visible, tangible outpost of an invisible Kingdom — the place where God’s reign becomes something a community can actually see, walk into, and be shaped by.
Every new church plant, every property purchased, every renovated sanctuary, every building expanded to hold a growing congregation is one more visible sign that the Kingdom Jesus promised to build is, in fact, being built.
Our Turn to Pick Up the Tools
If Christ is the builder, what does that leave for the rest of us? The New Testament describes ordinary believers as active participants in the church’s construction: living stones being built into a spiritual house, members of a body each contributing according to their gifts, a “holy temple” that grows as it is “joined together” (Ephesians 2:21). Building the church has never been a spectator sport reserved for pastors and apostles. It is the calling of every Christian, expressed through generosity, hospitality, spiritual disciplines, and, very practically, utilizing the resources that make ministry possible in the first place.

You are not merely a depositor. You are a participant in the promise Jesus made near Caesarea Philippi — that He would build His church, and that nothing would stand against it.
The tools have changed since Peter’s day — a certificate of investment instead of a fisherman’s net — but the invitation is the same. Christ is still building His church.
